Dormont Historic Architectural Survey

Client : Borough of Dormont
Location: Allegheny County, PA

Skelly and Loy is performing a historic architectural survey of this roughly three-quarter square-mile trolley suburb in the South Hills of Pittsburgh to identify, understand, celebrate, and preserve its history. The survey traces the rapid transformation of late-nineteenth-century, hilly farmland into a densely developed residential community by the 1930’s. Historic neighborhoods, potential historic districts, and individual buildings over 50 years old have been inventoried, and potentially eligible resources for National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) listing have been identified. The Potomac Avenue Commercial Historic District, one of the Borough’s primary commercial corridors including stores, offices, restaurants, theaters, banks, a school, and a church, has been the focus of particularly intensive eligibility studies. To engage the public in the Borough’s historic recognition and appreciation, a public presentation was made to community residents. Final survey results will be used to guide development and preservation discussions within the Borough and to pursue NRHP listings.
