Phase II Archaeological Testing

Phase II archaeological testing, also referred to as evaluation, is the more intensive study of an individual archaeological site once it has been identified. The goal of archaeological testing is to address the integrity, research potential, and significance of an archaeological site. Phase II testing evaluates the potential for a site to contribute to our knowledge of the pre-contact or historic period and thus be eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).

Archaeological testing field work relies on a work plan which incorporates research and field work methods that directly establish the horizontal and vertical boundaries of the site, reveal if there are cultural features or activity areas associated with the site, and determine the presence of information regarding artifact distributions or patterning. The exact methods used to obtain this information vary widely depending on the type, size, and temporal association of the archaeological site under consideration. The results of the archaeological testing field work and analyses are documented in a Phase II archaeological testing report.

Skelly and Loy archaeologists have performed Phase II testing on numerous sites include pre-contact (Native American) and historic period sites. Our close coordination with our clients and the regulatory agencies such as the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) allows us to provide innovative Phase II approaches tailored to meet the needs of the project and the type of archaeological site being tested. This leads to successful recommendations for site eligibility and future research which keeps the compliance process moving forward efficiently.
