Human And Ecological Risk Assessments

There is a wide variety of human health and ecological risk factors associated with releases of hazardous substances into the environment. Skelly and Loy has extensive experience in furnishing risk assessment services to address both human health and ecological risk factors.

Our Environmental Professionals have performed numerous "traditional" risk assessments. These studies have evaluated chlorinated solvents, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dioxins, and petroleum constituents at commercial and educational facilities. The risk assessments included source determination (soil vapor intrusion, historical use contamination, current site activities, etc.); pathway evaluations; receptor characterization (population types, occupational versus public, etc.); and health risks associated with acute, intermediate, and chronic exposures along with associated carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health effects. To perform these assessments, we have used API's DSS Exposure and Risk Assessment model and the Johnson and Ettinger vapor intrusion model.

An ecological risk assessment is an evaluation to assess the likelihood of adverse ecological effects as a result of exposure to one or more environmental stressors. Skelly and Loy has a staff of experienced Environmental Scientists to assess risks to the environment whether they arise through the release of contamination or from anthropogenic effects caused by development. Our experience ranges from the simplest scenarios in which comparisons of site data are made with standard, published criteria to the most complex studies where actual floral and faunal communities are sampled and the results are compared with ecologically identical reference sites.
